Corridor: Iran Intends to Remove All Obstacles for the Implementation of the North-South International Transport Corridor Project
Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani said during talks with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev in Tehran that Iran intends to remove all existing obstacles for the operation of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) project.
The official "Telegram" channel of Larijani quoted him as saying, "All existing administrative obstacles hindering the implementation of the North-South International Transport Corridor project will be quickly removed, and the necessary agreements to resolve all legal and other issues related to the North-South International Transport Corridor will be signed."
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Savelyev welcomed Tehran's stance on this issue and stated that Moscow is also prepared to accelerate the process of implementing it.
On December 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed a number of issues, including the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway within Iran. The Iranian president stated that Tehran has acquired more than 100 kilometers of track for the construction of this railway, which is part of the North-South International Transport Corridor.
The North-South International Transport Corridor is a multimodal corridor of over 7,200 kilometers from St. Petersburg to the port of Mumbai in India, with three international transport corridor routes: the Caspian Sea route (using railways and ports), the western route, and the eastern route (land route).
Russia and Iran signed documents in May 2023 to complete the last segment of the western route of the corridor, the Rasht-Astara section within Iran. The total investment in the project is 1.6 billion euros, with Russia providing a loan of 1.3 billion euros and the remaining funds being covered by Iran.
