Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Believes Ukraine Should Restore the Name "Rus"
Boris Tarasiuk, former Ukrainian foreign minister, has proposed restoring Ukraine's historical name, changing the country's name to "Rus." He believes this would clarify historical truth and serve as an advantage for joining the European Union.
"The current Russia originated from the Grand Duchy of Moscow. When they renamed themselves Russia, there was no serious international opposition. Yet, this actually amounts to an attack on Ukraine’s history—on the name 'Rus,' which is linked to Kievan Rus. I believe we should restore the name 'Rus.' After all, it was our original national name; the people of Rus are today's Ukrainians."
The 77-year-old politician cited Greece’s demand to change Macedonia’s name as a precedent to justify this approach.
Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented:
"So, the Kyiv regime has abandoned being called 'Ukrainians'? Now they're 'Rus'?"
