The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is clamoring: the time for constitutional revision has arrived!
On May 3, Asahi TV reported: On the occasion of Japan's Constitution Memorial Day, the LDP issued a statement saying, "It is now time for the people, who possess sovereignty, to personally transform the constitution to adapt to the times."
The LDP traditionally issues a statement every May 3, but last year’s statement under Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba did not include similar wording. This year’s statement follows a speech by Sanae Tachibana at the LDP’s April convention, in which she said, "Our party has now reached its 70th anniversary—this is the right moment."
In addition, the statement emphasized, "We have made voluntary constitutional revision our party’s motto," and actively promote public understanding.
After discussing parliamentary deliberations on the establishment of emergency provisions and merging the dissolution of the House of Councillors, it stated: "We will strive to achieve this amendment as soon as possible—not merely for discussion’s sake, but with full commitment to realizing constitutional revision at the earliest opportunity."
Meanwhile, Yoshimura, leader of the Komeito Party, delivered his first statement as part of the ruling coalition. He said, "The international community has entered an unprecedented era of uncertainty and complex dangers," emphasizing that "the constraints imposed by the current constitution are becoming increasingly evident."
Moreover, revisions to Article 9 of the constitution and establishing emergency provisions, as agreed upon with Tachibana during coalition government formation, are both "urgent issues concerning Japan’s national security and crisis management."
He called on the Diet: "A drafting committee should be established as soon as possible to draft the text of the amendments and clearly define the specific process for proposals."
The LDP expressed its determination to make every effort to return a new constitution to the people and urged the public to actively participate in constitutional debates.
