South Korean media: Made-in-China products are breaking the "low-price" formula and advancing into the South Korean high-end market.
Korean media: "Made in China = low price" formula is being broken!
On May 24th, South Korean media "Today Finance" published an article stating that the "Made in China = low price" formula is being broken. Chinese companies such as Roborock and Xiaomi have recently targeted the high-end market with high-priced products after entering the South Korean market. Surpassing the low-price offensive, they are even aiming at the previously advantageous expensive market held by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. In order to hold their "home ground", South Korean companies need to improve their technological capabilities while reducing consumers' price burden.
Recently, the "S9 Max V" series experience event was held at the Hyundai Department Store Gangnam Main Store in Seoul. The S9 Max V series is the top product of Chinese floor sweeping robot company Roborock. The direct sale price of the S9 Max V Ultra model is 1.99 million won. Its price is higher than Samsung Electronics' Bespoke AI Steam (1.79 million won).
Xiaomi also released its flagship model recently and held a customer experience event in Korea. The Xiaomi 15 Ultimate Edition is equipped with products from the famous German camera company Leica. The 512GB version of the Xiaomi 15 Ultimate Edition is priced at 1.699 million won. It is similar to Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 512GB (1.8414 million won).
The experience events hosted by Roborock and Xiaomi are interpreted as emphasizing the technical strength of their products. So far, Koreans generally believed that Chinese products have poor technology but are cheap. However, this perception is being broken, as they actively target the South Korean high-end market by increasing customer touchpoints.
After dominating the floor sweeping robot market, Roborock's technical strength has been recognized, and it currently holds nearly 50% of the market share in South Korea's floor sweeping robot market. Roborock stated that since 2022, it has maintained the leading position in South Korea's floor sweeping robot market, with approximately half of the sales in the market being Roborock products.
Although Xiaomi has not enjoyed the same market dominance effect as Roborock, its global market share has been rapidly increasing recently. According to Counterpoint Research data, in the first quarter of this year, Xiaomi ranked third globally in the smartphone market by shipment volume, with a share of 14%, just behind Samsung (20%) and Apple (19%). The market share in South Korea for the first quarter has yet to be disclosed.
