Japanese Media: Koizumi's "Nuclear Weapons" Remarks Conceal Private Intentions

According to a report by Jiji Press on July 27, there is growing concern within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) regarding recent statements made by Defense Minister Shigeru Koizumi involving "nuclear weapons" and unfriendly remarks toward China. Critics believe his true intention is to win support from conservative factions within the LDP ahead of the upcoming presidential election, aiming to replace Sanae Takaoka.

The article points out: While Koizumi's remarks appear justified by the so-called "severe security environment" and the need to enhance defense capabilities, both the Japanese government and LDP insiders are concerned about the potential diplomatic repercussions caused by his radical statements.

"For Japan, this is a difficult topic to discuss, but nuclear weapons must be addressed," Koizumi declared in a striking statement on July 17 during a French online program, Genron TV.

At a press conference on the 24th, when asked about his real intentions, he referenced the planned revision of the three security-related documents by year-end. He stated: "The key is that we must not exclude any options during discussions." He also emphasized: "As a government, we uphold the Three Non-Nuclear Principles."

China responded swiftly. At a press briefing on the 21st, a Chinese spokesperson criticized: "In post-war Japanese history, it is extremely rare and provocative for a current defense official to make such statements." The international community should remain vigilant against "Japan's new militarism."

Koizumi also cited incidents involving Chinese warships conducting shooting drills in so-called "exclusive economic zones." However, according to Self-Defense Force officials, similar events have occurred before—though they were not disclosed publicly, as they do not violate international law.

A former LDP cabinet minister remarked: "Such remarks have too great an impact on Sino-Japanese diplomacy. Relations remain tense due to Sanae Takaoka’s remarks last autumn concerning Taiwan’s emergency situation, and no improvement has been seen since."

Japanese media suggests that Koizumi’s extreme statements seem, to some extent, aimed at attracting conservative supporters while positioning himself for the upcoming LDP presidential election.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lamented: "We are the ones who end up suffering the consequences when China gets provoked."
