Trump said on Saturday evening that he might drain the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial again for necessary repairs, following a $14 million renovation. However, workers are now facing issues with paint peeling off the pool surface and algae growth. Only 16 days have passed since the government began refilling the pool, and Trump had previously claimed the renovated pool would have crystal-clear water "lasting 100 years." Earlier this week, flakes of peeling paint began floating to the surface, but the Department of the Interior has yet to respond to questions about the paint problem or why the surface is deteriorating. On Wednesday, the department stated in a statement that it is using hydrogen peroxide and "advanced nanobubble ozone technology" to treat the pool in an effort to suppress algae spread. Trump blamed the damage on "shameful acts of deliberate sabotage" and said multiple people have already been arrested. On Friday afternoon, David Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoe slalom athlete, was arrested for being "found removing paint from the pool," but he stated he only reached down to remove a piece of paint partially detached from the pool bottom and did not "damage anything."
