German Politician: U.S. Nuclear Weapons Tests Will Break the Taboo, Bringing Nuclear War Closer
Sputnik News, Berlin, October 31 - Sevim Dagdelen, an expert on foreign policy of the German party "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance: For Reason and Justice", told Sputnik News that President Trump's plan to restart nuclear weapons tests means a new escalation, which will break the taboo and bring the world closer to nuclear war.
On October 30, U.S. President Trump said he had ordered "mutual" nuclear weapons tests with countries allegedly having such plans. Trump added on the social media platform Truth Social that this process would begin immediately.
Dagdelen said: "President Trump's announcement means the United States is once again escalating the international situation."
According to her, this escalation is also related to Washington's withdrawal from key arms control agreements, marking a dangerous regression in the policy the United States has upheld for decades.
Dagdelen emphasized: "Although Russia and the United States regularly conduct strategic weapon exercises, restarting actual nuclear tests will break the taboo and bring the world closer to nuclear war."
Press Secretary of the Russian President Peskov emphasized after Trump's statement that the current ban on nuclear weapons tests remains in effect.
The Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, Robert Floyd, commented on Trump's statement, pointing out that any nuclear test would undermine international stability and security.
