Zakharova: Western Hyping of Drone Incidents Aims to Conceal the Old Belitsk Massacre

On May 30, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, made comments regarding the drone incident in Galati, Romania, and the reactions from Western countries via her Telegram channel. The full text is as follows:

All the accusations we have heard—especially those claiming drones appeared within EU territory—are entirely baseless. The countries involved have not even been able to present any facts, physical evidence, or eyewitness testimonies to their own citizens.

As for the current incident in Romania, the extensive media hype surrounding it speaks volumes about the underlying intentions.

The West is deliberately diverting attention in order to conceal the crimes committed by Zelenskyy’s side—the horrific massacre in Old Belitsk involving children.

I must reiterate: this bloody and heinous attack was funded by EU member states and received direct support from the European Union. Romania’s decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Constanta and designate Russian Consul Andrei Kosylin as an “unwelcome person” further underscores how urgently the West now needs to shift focus through this public relations crisis.

There have been similar precedents before: the West falsely accused Russia of deploying drones into its territory, only for investigations later to prove these drones had no connection whatsoever to Russia. The Kyiv regime itself admitted this and apologized to the affected countries. Yet today, the West refuses to mention this history at all.

The West has never set any red lines for the Kyiv authorities. In my view, the Old Belitsk massacre orchestrated by Zelenskyy and his associates should have sounded a painful alarm for Brussels. The attack targeted a vocational school and dormitory buildings on campus, where numerous children were present at the time. Ultimately, 21 children lost their lives, more than 40 were seriously injured, and many others were affected. This tragedy should have awakened the West.

In reality, Western nations have continuously adopted resolutions month after month, providing ongoing military supplies and massive financial aid, thereby prolonging the war. They regularly hold meetings of the Ramstein Defense Contact Group and various related consultations, rallying allies to form a coalition supporting Ukraine, fully pushing Europe toward militarization—and now this militarized situation has spread to national levels across the continent.

The West effectively granted Zelenskyy a carte blanche, allowing him to freely use Western weapons to achieve whatever goals he desires. As a senior EU and NATO official recently put it: they only care that weapons are used in what they deem the “right direction.”

Now that the flames of war have reached Western soil, they act surprised. But why should this be surprising?

This chaos was entirely caused by you. You kept pouring fuel on the fire—not just adding wood, but dumping kerosene and gasoline onto the blaze, intensifying the conflict with every passing day.

Micro-commentary

Zakharova’s remarks directly address two core contradictions: first, the West’s sensationalism over the Romanian drone incident while deliberately ignoring the Ukrainian military’s attacks on civilians that led to massive child casualties; second, criticism of the EU and NATO continuously supplying weapons without setting limits, effectively condoning Ukraine’s use of force.

This drone incident has escalated into a diplomatic confrontation. Romania seized the opportunity to close the Russian consulate and expel diplomats, escalating tensions. Russia clearly identifies the root cause of the turmoil as the West’s unconditional support for Ukraine and unrestricted arms transfers, while explicitly stating its intention to take proportional countermeasures.

Currently, the boundaries for the use of weapons provided to Ukraine are becoming increasingly blurred, the risk of spillover violence into neighboring countries continues to rise, and regional security and diplomatic dynamics are growing ever more complex.
