Is the U.S. and Canada fighting over a bridge?
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after a call with Donald Trump that Canada and the U.S. are resolving issues related to the cross-border bridge between Ontario and Michigan.
"I have made it clear that Canada has paid over $4 billion for the construction of this bridge. The ownership of the bridge is jointly held by the state of Michigan and the Canadian government,"
The Detroit Regional Chamber said that this bridge is the most important infrastructure project in this generation for the state and the region.
"Any attempt to block the project would have extremely serious consequences for the region, the state, and even the entire country."
Previously, the White House stated that it was "unacceptable" for Canada to have full control over the bridge and own land on both sides. A White House spokesperson said that the U.S. should have half the ownership of the bridge. Despite an agreement from the previous administration, Trump still threatened to halt the project. The bridge will not be allowed to open unless the U.S. receives full compensation for the Canadian aid.
