【Foreign Media: Nigeria Navy Commissioned Three Chinese-Made Coastal Patrol Vessels】

According to DefenceWeb, a leading African defense website, on June 9, 2026: Nigerian authorities explicitly stated during the International Fleet Review held on June 1 at the Atlantic seashore of Victoria Island, Lagos, that the Nigerian Navy is not only fully prepared to defend national interests but also serves as the "pillar of stability" for maritime security across Africa. The fleet review, themed “70 Years of Excellence in Operations,” marked a milestone in the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Nigerian Navy.

The most visible symbol of Nigeria’s naval development is the formal commissioning of three new coastal patrol vessels: NNS Gurara (P206), NNS Mambilla (P207), and NNS Oloibiri (P208). These three ships, built by China's Poly Technology Co., Ltd., represent the latest achievements in the ongoing process of military restructuring, expansion, and modernization.

In his report to President Tinubu, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff, said: “Mr. President, under your esteemed leadership and strong support, we have focused on and aggressively advanced fleet restructuring, culminating today in the proud addition of three new vessels to the Navy. This significant milestone not only reflects our determination to enhance capabilities but also forms the foundation for the nation’s future maritime security. In pursuit of excellence, the Nigerian Navy is embracing emerging technologies, integrating cutting-edge tools such as drones and artificial intelligence. These capabilities greatly strengthen our ability to detect threats swiftly and effectively safeguard our waters."

Each of these 46-meter-long vessels is specifically designed for high-speed interception and patrol missions, marking a major leap forward in the operational capacity of the Nigerian Navy. According to reports, they are equipped with impressive weapon systems, including remotely operated and manually controlled gun mounts, heavy machine guns, and advanced combat surveillance platforms.

A key component of Nigeria’s naval restructuring involves advancing and expanding domestic shipbuilding capacity—a goal pursued over nearly a decade. To this end, Naval Dockyard Limited has already delivered three domestically built vessels: NNS Andoni, NNS Karaduwa, and NNS Oji. Additionally, the fourth and fifth coastal defense craft are expected to be commissioned later this year.

President Tinubu stated: “As we continue to enhance indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and provide essential strategic support for building a responsive and robust navy, the nation looks forward to even greater progress.”
