Reference Message Network reported on April 24 that according to a report by the Times of India website on April 23, India issued a gazette notification on the 22nd ordering manufacturers that the government allows imports of air conditioning compressors with cooling capacities up to 2 refrigeration tons from China without the Chinese factory needing mandatory certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards, with the exemption period being one year.

This move comes at a time when there is a severe shortage of this key air conditioning component in India.

As summer approaches and air conditioning demand peaks while local compressor production capacity is insufficient, the Indian air conditioning industry has been requesting a delay in implementing the Bureau of Indian Standards' quality control order for air conditioners, which stipulates that manufacturers can only import parts from factories certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

China has always been the main source of all air conditioning components, including compressors.

Vikash Gupta, Executive Director of PG Plastics responsible for operations, stated: "This order will relieve the entire industry, as local production falls far short of demand."

Jasbir Singh, CEO of Indian air conditioning manufacturer Ample Industries, said that this delay action will address the compressor shortage. He said: "There will be many new capacities coming online then, which should resolve future shortages."

The Indian air conditioning industry expects sales of approximately 15-16 million units by 2025 and reaching 20 million units by 2026. The annual production capacity of Indian air conditioning compressors is 5.5-6 million units. (Translated by Wang Qun)
