South Korean media: In the crisis, will South Korea's display also lose to China in OLED? On April 29, the South Korean media "Global Economy" published an article stating that not long ago, Japan's JDI announced the suspension of OLED technology development, and Japan has actually withdrawn from the global display market. Companies such as Sharp and Panasonic once dominated the market, but all of this has become history. Currently, the display market is divided between South Korea and China. Chinese enterprises dominate the LCD market with price competitiveness, while South Korea maintains an advantage in the high-end OLED market. However, with China's rapidly increasing OLED market share in recent years, the gap with South Korea is narrowing. In particular, China has shown a willingness to capture the OLED market by actively investing in Micro OLED, which is considered the next-generation display. China has experienced rapid growth in the display market over the past decade and is now attempting to surpass South Korea, a strong player in the display industry. China has already become the global leader in the LCD market. According to data from market research firm Omdia, China's LCD panel share was only 31% in 2016, but last year it reached 49.7%. On the other hand, due to the low-price offensive of Chinese enterprises, South Korean companies are exiting the LCD market. Samsung Display completely closed its LCD business in 2022, and LG Display sold its shares in the TV LCD factory and module factory located in Guangzhou, China to CSOT at the end of March. The Guangzhou LCD factory was the last TV LCD production base for South Korea's display industry. Although it is regrettable that South Korean display companies have been squeezed out of the LCD market, they maintain an advantage in the high-value-added OLED field. For example, in the future-oriented automotive OLED market, Samsung Display ranked first in both shipment volume and sales revenue for two consecutive years. LG Display maintained its position as the top player in the high-end automotive display market last year. Although South Korean companies dominate the OLED market, China, based on its strong domestic demand, is rapidly closing the gap with South Korea. This phenomenon can be observed across nearly all fields using OLED panels, such as laptops, automotive displays, and smartphones. According to data from market research firm Omdia, Samsung Electronics ranked first in the global laptop OLED share last year with 76.5%. From just this number, it can be seen that Samsung dominates the market, but compared to the previous year, the situation has changed. Samsung's share in 2023 was 99.6%, but it dropped 23.1 percentage points within a year. On the other hand, the second-ranked China-based Hevol Display jumped from 0.2% in 2023 to 17.9% last year. If we compare South Korean and Chinese companies, the gap was 99.4% in 2023, but it narrowed to 54.3% last year. The automotive OLED market is similar. South Korean companies held a 32.5% share last year, ranking first, while Chinese companies ranked second with 29.8%. South Korea's share increased by 1.6 percentage points in one year, while China's share grew by about 10 percentage points. This is the result of China's expansion in the electric vehicle industry and the installation of domestically produced OLEDs in electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles. China is expected to soon become the country with the highest OLED smartphone display shipments. Last year, the combined share of Samsung Display and LG Display was 55.1%, down 6 percentage points from 61.1% in 2023. On the other hand, the global share of China's major display enterprises was 44.8%, up 6.1 percentage points from the previous year. Moreover, China is also attempting to seize the Micro OLED market, which is considered the next-generation display. If this happens, the display market may become China's domain.
