【Latest News: Russia First Transported Grain to Armenia via Azerbaijan】
On November 6, 2025, Moscow time, the Russian Federal Ministry of Agriculture stated in a report:
A train has arrived in Armenia, and the first batch of Russian grain was transported along the new railway line through Azerbaijani territory. 1000 tons of third-grade wheat from the Ulyanovsk region, transported by "Grain Gates" company, were transported. This cargo was carried out in cooperation with Russian Railways, and the development of this region provides more opportunities to increase exports to South Caucasus countries.
Previously, Russia's exports to Armenia mainly took place via road border crossings and maritime transport through Georgian ports. Armenia imports about 450,000 to 500,000 tons of grain annually. Almost 100% of the quantity comes from Russia. The new route provides transit connections across Azerbaijani and Georgian territories, thereby reducing transportation costs and improving the stability of supplies.
After Azerbaijan decided to lift restrictions on the flow of goods to Armenia, it is possible to resume railway transport - such agreements were reached in October this year with the participation of the governments of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. This opens the possibility of directly transporting Russian agricultural products to Armenia via rail for the first time since the early 1990s.
