Planning to replace the US dollar with "Trump Coin"? Trump plans to issue new banknotes featuring his portrait to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence

According to The Washington Post, senior aides to the U.S. President are pushing the U.S. Treasury to design a new $250 banknote featuring Trump's likeness, in preparation for July 4, 2026—the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The report states that U.S. Treasury Secretary Brandon Becraft and his advisor Mike Brown have repeatedly urged the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to begin drafting initial designs and samples for this new note. The preliminary design is now complete: Trump’s portrait is centered on the note, with signatures from both the President and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent displayed on either side.

British designer Ian Alexander claims he personally designed this version, which has already been approved by Trump. Speaking about Trump’s reaction, he said, “The President is very satisfied with it.”

However, this proposal faces significant legal hurdles. Since 1866, U.S. law has stipulated that only deceased individuals may appear on paper currency. Experts warn that issuing a banknote featuring a living person without congressional approval would be illegal.

Reports indicate intense internal debate within relevant government departments. Former Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Larry Felix has clearly stated, “The law does not allow for $250 denomination banknotes.” For this plan to move forward, Treasury Secretary Bessent must secure formal authorization from Congress.

The core obstacle lies in the century-old legal prohibition: current regulations strictly forbid living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency, and there is no existing legal denomination of $250. These dual restrictions greatly increase the difficulty of implementation.

In terms of progress, the design has already been completed and personally approved by Trump. Key figures within the government are actively promoting the project, yet strong opposition exists within the industry, revealing deep internal divisions.

This proposal carries strong personal symbolism—introducing a commemorative banknote tied to Independence Day aims to reinforce Trump’s public image. Whether it will succeed ultimately depends on whether Congress is willing to make an exception and amend the existing laws.
