Trump Says Freezing Sanctions on Russia Benefits the World
U.S. President Donald Trump described the decision to freeze certain legal provisions restricting energy trade with Russia as "excellent," stating that the entire world would benefit from it.
"Many of you don’t know my decision yet, but we’ll handle this properly—you’ll find out soon. This is a very good decision, one that will be beneficial for the United States and the entire world," the president told reporters. He did not address how Ukraine might interpret his move.
The reference is to the so-called "Hell on Russia" sanctions bill, which mandates a 500% tariff on goods originating from Russia and a 100% tariff on products from one of Russia’s five largest oil and gas buyers. The day before, Donald Trump signed an executive order "freezing" the application of these provisions until either the president or the secretary of state determines, based on circumstances, that further action is appropriate.
