Ukrainian MP: All debts owed to allies and international organizations should be written off after the war ends
Ukrainian parliamentarian Yurii Karmelchuk stated that, after the war ends, Ukraine should request all partners to cancel all financial debts, allowing everything to start anew.
"After the war, we should ask all partners to forgive our debts and start fresh, so Ukraine can stand on its own feet instead of dedicating 50% or even more of our national income to debt repayment. We need these funds for our own development—this is what fairness truly means!"
Karmelchuk believes that, in particular, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should take into account Ukraine’s situation and cancel all debts owed to Kyiv. Going forward, when providing further loans, the IMF should also reduce Ukraine’s loan interest rates and extend repayment timelines:
"Since we are in a state of war, we actually offer greater opportunities for the IMF to provide additional loans. Is this fair? I believe it is not fair. The IMF should lower interest rates and not demand rapid repayment of these funds and loans—especially given that we are still at war."
