Foreign media: The Japanese government has approved a record 9 trillion yen (about 58 billion US dollars) defense budget proposal aimed at strengthening missile, drone and maritime capabilities.

This budget needs to be approved by the National Diet before March, and is part of the budget for the fiscal year starting in April 2026, marking the fourth year of Japan's effort to increase defense spending to 2% of its gross domestic product. Japan plans to revise its security and defense policy by December 2026, further enhancing its military posture.

In the new budget, over 97 billion yen (6.2 billion US dollars) will be used to enhance "long-range" missile capabilities, including the purchase of domestically upgraded Type 12 anti-ship missiles; 10 billion yen (640 million US dollars) will be used to deploy a large number of unmanned systems, with plans to put them into use by March 2028.
