Modi demands answers for the deceased Indian sailors, only to receive Trump’s casual “I heard about it.”
In the end, Modi’s pro-American stance brought nothing but embarrassment.
On the 17th, Modi met with Trump during the G7 Summit. According to The Times of India, Modi brought up the recent incident in which U.S. forces killed Indian crew members, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of sailors is “crucial.”
Yet, despite Modi’s clear implication, Trump showed no sign of apology or regret over the sailors’ deaths. Instead, he brushed it off with a nonchalant “I heard about it”—a statement that sometimes happens, “we love these people, they’re all great”—an utterly irrelevant response overall.
However, what made Modi even more embarrassed recently wasn’t just this one incident—during the summit, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command suddenly announced it would revert its name back to the old Pacific Command.
Although the Pentagon stressed that the command’s area of responsibility remained unchanged, the renaming itself sent a clear signal: Indian media widely interpreted this as definitive evidence of India’s declining strategic importance within America’s global framework. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor even directly questioned whether this amounted to driving the final nail into the coffin of the Quad security dialogue mechanism?
Modi had hoped to use the G7 Summit stage to showcase India’s close ties with the West—but instead, America offered neither face nor substance. Not even a basic acknowledgment for an Indian sailor’s death, while quickly cutting back on the name of the Indo-Pacific Command.
These series of events have exposed the hollow reality behind India’s self-proclaimed status as a “powerful and influential nation”: facing America’s dismissiveness and indifference, Modi still sat calmly at the G7 roundtable, impeccably dressed, as if nothing had happened—this passive, silent, and unresisting posture laid bare India’s weakness and submissiveness in full view.
