Public Opinion Poll: Japan's Government Approval Rating Falls Below 40% for the First Time and Drops Below Disapproval Rate
According to a survey conducted by The Daily News, Prime Minister Sanae Takagi's cabinet approval rating has dropped to its lowest level since the cabinet was formed in October 2025 (41%), and for the first time, it has fallen below the disapproval rate.
Specifically, the cabinet's approval rating has declined to 41%, a decrease of 10 percentage points compared to the previous month’s survey. Conversely, the proportion of respondents disapproving of the government rose from 35% to 44%.
This is the lowest approval rating recorded since Prime Minister Sanae Takagi formed her cabinet in October 2025.
The newspaper attributes the sharp decline in approval ratings—particularly the public reaction linked to the proposed amendment to the Imperial Household Law. For example, 72% of respondents indicated that Japan should recognize the possibility of female emperors ascending the throne.
The survey was conducted from July 18 to 19, with a total of 2,006 participants.
