European Commission: Trump Reaffirms US Support for EU Deployment of Troops in Ukraine
Sputnik News, Brussels - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the Financial Times that US President Donald Trump reiterated that if Europe deploys troops in Ukraine, the US will provide support.
Von der Leyen said, "President Trump (on August 18 in Washington) assured us that the US would provide support. This is very clear and has been repeatedly confirmed."
US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders on August 18 at the White House. During the meeting, Trump stated that he would not compare the security guarantees that Kyiv might receive with NATO's existing security guarantees. Trump also said that during his presidency, US troops would not be stationed in Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, the security guarantees for Kyiv from the US and Europe would rely on a "volunteer alliance," which may include multinational forces.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that any plan for NATO countries to deploy troops within Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable, which would lead to a sharp escalation of the situation. The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that statements by the UK and other European countries about the possible deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine are inciting the continuation of military actions.
