Korean Media: South Korean Quantum Computing Talent Ranks Among the Top Ten Globally, with China and the US Leading Far Ahead!
On November 24, the Korean newspaper "Korea Economic Daily" published an article stating that an analysis of global quantum-related papers aims to map the distribution of global quantum talent. The results showed that South Korea ranks 10th in quantum computing, and 12th in quantum communication and quantum sensing.
Recently, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea reviewed and approved the "Analysis of Global Talent Map for Strategic Technologies in the Quantum Field." Quantum science and technology, including quantum computers, are strategic technologies with significant impact. Countries around the world are fully investing in related research and striving to attract talent.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has divided the quantum field into three key areas: quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. It conducted an in-depth analysis of relevant research papers to understand the distribution of key global talents and changes in research trends. The analysis focused on the first author and corresponding author of the papers. In terms of international cooperation, all authors were included in the study.
The analysis results show that China and the United States have the most researchers in all key quantum technology fields. Among the top 10% of key researchers by paper citations, more than half are from China and the United States; even when considering only the top 1% of researchers by paper citations, the number of researchers from China and the United States also exceeds half. Among the top 1% researchers in each country, the United States mainly concentrates on tech companies such as Google and IBM. In China and Germany, a considerable number of quantum researchers are engaged in scientific research. All top 1% researchers in South Korea come from academia, including Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
An analysis of the inflow and outflow of key quantum researchers by country found that over the past decade, China and the United States have been net importers of quantum researchers in all fields. South Korea had a net inflow of 21 people in quantum computing, 10 people in quantum communication, and 16 people in quantum sensing.
