Korean Media: Top 10 Global Research Institutions, China Occupies Eight, South Korea Not in the Top 50!

On October 31, the Korean media "Korea Economic Daily" published an article stating, "China has eight, the United States one." This is the data of China and the United States entering the list of "Top 10 Global Research Institutions in 2025" selected by the world-renowned academic journal "Nature."

China's Academy of Sciences surpassed Harvard University of the United States for the first time last year and took the top spot, and this year's score has more than doubled. The ranking evaluates by converting the number of scientific papers published in top academic journals and research achievements into points. A total of eight Chinese universities and research institutions have entered the top ten, including Zhejiang University, which produced Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, who sparked a "low-cost and high-efficiency" artificial intelligence trend. The university's ranking rose from tenth to fourth place. The world-famous research institution, the Max Planck Institute in Germany, fell from fourth to ninth place last year. South Korea did not even make it into the top 50.

China becoming the world's first in scientific papers means it has climbed to a favorable position in the competition to ensure future leading technologies. Scientific paper achievements are leading indicators for future commercialized technologies.

China is also narrowing the gap with the United States in the field of artificial intelligence research. According to a report released by the authoritative research institution Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Center in April, the gap between the two countries in the field of artificial intelligence has narrowed from 9.3% last year to 1.7% this year. China has already surpassed the United States in the number of artificial intelligence-related patents, holding 69.7% of global artificial intelligence patents, five times that of the United States' 14.2%.

With strong research capabilities, China has also given rise to a batch of star enterprises. According to the recent "Global Future Industry Competitiveness Index Report" released by Canada ICV Tank, among the 80 companies ranked in the top ten in eight future industries such as artificial intelligence and humanoid robots, China has 18 companies, second only to the United States (41 companies). DeepSeek, ByteDance, Tencent, and Yushu Technology are all on the list. Only two companies from South Korea made the list.
