Media: Bangladesh in Talks with UK and Chinese Firms Over SMR Procurement
According to a report by Bloomberg citing Bangladesh's Minister of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, the country is currently negotiating potential procurement of small modular reactors (SMRs), with prospective suppliers including Rolls-Royce Holdings from the UK and Chinese manufacturers.
Mahmud said the government is considering building power plants with a capacity of 300 to 400 megawatts—smaller-scale facilities that can be constructed along riverbanks and deployed more quickly than traditional reactors. He noted that Bangladesh will no longer build large nuclear power plants due to "huge debt burdens."
Additionally, Mohammad Zahidul Hassan, Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Co. Bangladesh Ltd., the operator of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant, Rooppur, stated that the first unit is expected to be fully operational by early 2027, with the second unit following one year later.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, located 160 kilometers from the capital Dhaka, features Russian advanced design with two VVER-1200 reactor units, totaling a capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
