[Roma people threw stones and bricks at the Ukrainian border guards]

On May 29, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that in a Roma settlement in the city of Velikyi Bereznyi in Transcarpathia region, local residents threw stones and bricks at the border patrol team on duty, injuring two border guards.

The report stated, "That night, when the border guards were working with the National Police and the National Guard to verify individuals suspected of assisting eligible citizens to cross the Ukrainian-Slovakian border in the Roma community of Velikyi Bereznyi, a group of residents actively resisted law enforcement personnel. The organizers of the conflict incited crowds including women and minors to participate in illegal activities and threw stones and bricks at the border guards and vehicles."

In order to protect personal safety, law enforcement officers used physical restraint methods and special equipment (such as rubber bullet launchers). Two border guards sustained moderate physical injuries and have been sent to the hospital for treatment, and two border guard vehicles were damaged.

The participants in the attack have been detained, and their actions are suspected of violating Articles 345 and 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (threatening or using violence against law enforcement officers and intentionally damaging property, respectively). Relevant cases have been transferred to the National Police for investigation. Afterward, the crowd attempted to block the border guards, but after persuasion, they stopped the illegal activities.
