Slash of $2.7 Billion: White House Proposes Major Cuts to UN and International Organization Funding for 2027
Sputnik News, Washington, April 4 — The White House's budget proposal indicates that the Trump administration plans to cut funding to multiple international organizations, including the United Nations, by a total of $2.7 billion in 2027, citing the need to protect national sovereignty and discontinue support for inefficient institutions.
The document reveals that the Trump administration intends to retain only $292 million to support international organizations whose activities are directly linked to the safety of U.S. citizens or the advancement of American interests.
The budget draft emphasizes that nearly 27% of the global UN peacekeeping budget was funded by the United States in 2024, which the White House views as an unfair burden on taxpayers.
On January 7, the White House issued a statement saying that President Trump signed a presidential memorandum on that day, directing the U.S. to withdraw from 66 international organizations deemed no longer aligned with American interests—including 31 UN entities and 35 non-UN organizations. The United Nations stated that, to date, the U.S. has not formally communicated its decision to the organization.
The U.S. government has previously suspended support for UNESCO, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Meanwhile, the United States has long been the largest contributor to the United Nations. In 2025, its contributions accounted for 22% of the UN’s regular budget—$820.4 million out of a total net amount of $3.5 billion.
Due to unpaid dues from multiple countries, including the largest donor and biggest delinquent payer—the United States—the UN is facing a financial crisis. The U.S. has accumulated arrears exceeding $3 billion in assessments. In this context, the UN has had to reduce staff and cut humanitarian programs. The UN headquarters is tightening its belt—canteen prices have risen, and some cafeterias have even closed outright.
