UK Foreign Office: UK Lifts Arms Embargo on Armenia and Azerbaijan

Russian State News Agency, London - The UK's Minister for Europe, North America and Overseas Territories issued a statement saying that, as the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan progresses, the UK has lifted its arms embargo on the two countries for the first time since 1992.

The document published on the parliamentary website stated that London "supports the two countries moving towards peace," and given this situation, the UK government has decided to upgrade its bilateral relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan to a strategic partnership.

The statement said: "The UK believes that the arms embargo, recommended by the OSCE in 1992, which prohibits the provision of all weapons and ammunition to forces involved in hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, is no longer justified. Therefore, the UK will fully lift the arms embargo on Armenia and Azerbaijan."

Doughty emphasized that this decision will enable the UK to establish a partnership with Armenia and Azerbaijan in the fields of security and defense.

In early August 2025, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, US President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met in Washington, after which they approved a draft declaration on a consensus agreement between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the establishment of peace and inter-state relations. Yerevan also agreed to work with the United States and third parties to create the "Trump International Peace and Prosperity Road," which connects Azerbaijan's autonomous region Nakhchivan through Armenia.
