Russian Foreign Minister Criticizes Japan: Summons Japanese Ambassador to Moscow Over Putin's Visit to Iturup Island
Russia Summons Japanese Ambassador Over Putin’s Visit to Iturup Island
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that due to Tokyo’s protest against President Vladimir Putin’s August 13 visit to Iturup Island, the Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned Japan’s ambassador to Moscow. Lavrov said the meeting would not only address Japan’s reaction to Putin’s trip but also examine the ambassador’s conduct in carrying out his diplomatic duties in the host country.
Lavrov said: “We will discuss both the behavior of Japan’s leadership regarding President Putin’s visit to Russia’s Iturup Island and how the ambassador should perform his duties in the country where he is accredited.”
Previously, Tokyo immediately lodged a protest on August 13 after Putin’s first visit to the Kuril Islands and summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolai Nogovitsyn to Tokyo. However, some Japanese lawmakers criticized their government for this move as “immature.” In response, Russia emphasized that Japan has no right to interfere with the Russian president’s domestic itinerary.
