Lütt: NATO and the US discuss Greenland issue, aiming to prevent China and Russia

AFP, Davos, Switzerland, 22nd. NATO Secretary General Lütt said today that the talks between NATO and the United States on the Greenland issue aim to ensure that countries such as Russia cannot gain military and economic access to Denmark's Arctic territory.

President of the United States Donald Trump decided to abandon the threat of seizing Greenland by force after a meeting with Lütt (Mark Rutte) in the Swiss resort of Davos yesterday. Trump also pointed out that a "framework" agreement satisfactory to him has been reached on the Greenland issue.

Lütt said today during a side event on the Ukraine issue at the World Economic Forum in Davos: "It was a very good discussion."

Lütt said that the next talks will be based on the results of his meeting with Trump. One of the "key areas of work" is how the NATO allies, including seven members in the Arctic region, can "jointly ensure Arctic security and prevent the involvement of countries such as Russia."

He said another issue is to ensure that countries such as Russia cannot gain "access to the economic or military" channels of Greenland Island.

Foreign Minister of Denmark Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Foreign Minister of Greenland Vivian Motzfeldt met in Washington with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the 14th, although no consensus was reached, but an high-level working group will be established to continue the dialogue.

Denmark's Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen also posted on social media platform X that NATO Secretary General Lütt has no authority to negotiate on the Greenland issue on behalf of Denmark, "we have clear red lines, and we will not give up the sovereignty of part of the Danish kingdom."

According to Reuters, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also said that Denmark and Greenland are still willing to engage in constructive dialogue on Arctic security issues, provided that the dialogue respects Denmark's territorial integrity.
