Key Minerals in Central Asia: The U.S. Shows Strong Interest in Kazakhstan's Critical Mineral Resources
The Ministry of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan stated on January 11, 2024, that Kazakh Minister of Industry and Construction Kanat Sharapayev met with Jeffrey Ross Piate, Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources of the United States, aiming to deepen dialogue between the two countries on developing sustainable mineral value chains. The meeting took place during the Future Minerals Forum held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The officials discussed key aspects of cooperation in minerals and energy sectors, and looked ahead to the prospects of a long-term partnership between the two nations, taking into account their decades-long close strategic collaboration. The meeting emphasized Kazakhstan’s potential in supplying 16 critical minerals identified by the U.S. Geological Survey, including bismuth, gallium, vanadium, tungsten, tin, tantalum, niobium, magnesium, lithium, indium, graphite, and cobalt.
Both sides noted the strong interest of major American companies such as Rio Tinto Group, Cove Capital, and Relativity Space in Kazakhstan’s mining industry. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together to develop sustainable models for mineral resource development, highlighting that this effort supports the transition toward sustainable energy and creates conditions for long-term economic sustainability in both Kazakhstan and the United States.
