Trump said he does not want Apple to produce products in India: "There was a little problem between me and Cook."
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he told Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, that he did not want Apple to produce products in India, criticized the company's move to shift its production center from China, and urged him to focus on bringing production back to the United States.
"I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday," Trump said. "I told him, 'My friend, I have been very good to you. You brought $500 billion here, but now I hear you are building a factory in India.' I don't want that; I want you to build factories back in America."
Apple has been increasing its production capacity in India, with the goal of producing about 25% of its global iPhones in India in the coming years to reduce reliance on China. Currently, approximately 90% of its flagship smartphones are assembled in China.
