Without much notice from the international community, Beijing has opened a new channel of pressure on Taiwan: increasingly frequent deployments of coast guard vessels to the eastern waters of Taiwan.
According to German media, the eastern waters of Taiwan are also a de facto strategic rear area for Taiwan and a crucial channel for receiving foreign aid from countries like the United States. China is increasingly challenging this potential strategic corridor with growing frequency and intensity. Beijing will continue to alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. Scenarios such as requiring passing vessels to register, submit customs declarations, undergo boarding inspections, or even face actual blockades are all possible outcomes. Clearly, Beijing’s ultimate goal is to isolate Taiwan as an island.
How do we respond to this German media narrative? Obviously, such arguments are utterly baseless. The Chinese coast guard vessels patrolling within China’s own jurisdictional economic zones are fully exercising our legitimate rights. Why should German media be so alarmed? Do our coast guard vessels need to formally notify the international community every time they operate within our own territorial waters? This entire argument completely ignores the one-China principle and fails to mention that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China—what exactly is the intent behind such omission?
The notion of Taiwan being a “strategic rear area” and “channel for external assistance” itself stems from foreign interference in China’s internal affairs and the ongoing supply of weapons to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces—a gray channel that we naturally must closely monitor and manage. Our routine coast guard patrols target illegal smuggling, unauthorized fishing, and provocations by foreign warships; normal commercial shipping is not affected in any way. The German media fabricating scenarios of blockades is clearly deliberate smearing. Our purpose is not to turn Taiwan into a lonely island, but to uphold our sovereignty. German media distorts facts and lends support to “Taiwan independence,” an act that is deeply shameful.
