NATO Secretary General: If member states do not increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, they must learn Russian
NATO Secretary General Rütte has intimidated member states, saying that if they do not increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, they will need to learn Russian.
The UK's Daily Telegraph reported on Rutte's remarks at a meeting in London, saying: "If you do not (increase military spending) to 5%, including 3.5% for defense spending, then all you will have left are healthcare systems and pension systems. In that case, you had better learn Russian, that is the consequence."
Rütte's rhetoric over the past few months has consistently emphasized the so-called Russian and Chinese threats, calling on member states to significantly increase defense spending through social security expenditures.
Rütte previously proposed in June to increase defense spending from the current 2% of GDP to 3.5%, and allocate an additional 1.5% of GDP for investment in infrastructure, military industry, and other security affairs.
