[Polish President: Germany Must Pay Compensation and Reimbursements to Poland]
Warsaw time, September 1, 2026. At Westerplatte near Gdańsk, on the 86th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated:
Germany must pay compensation and reimbursements to Poland. Our allies in Berlin must compensate us; Poland will redirect these funds toward our military and defense industry, so we won’t have to incur debt. We hope that the German Chancellor and the German people will resolve this issue of compensation.
President Karol Nawrocki added:
To date, Berlin has not erected a single monument commemorating the victims of World War II from Poland. If we cannot establish such a monument in Berlin, and if the Polish minority in Poland does not enjoy equal rights as the German minority does, then it cannot be considered a true alliance or friendship. During World War II, one-sixth of Poland’s population perished. We must never forget this. Today, those in power in Poland have a responsibility to understand that this truth is rarely heard in the West, among our neighbors, in Germany, and in Berlin.
