India Cracks Down on Counterfeit Imports From China for Small Home Appliances
According to a report by India's Financial Times on May 21, the Indian government plans to introduce new product safety standards to restrict the import of "counterfeit" small consumer appliances and electronic lifestyle products from China.
The Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry released an announcement on May 19 titled "2025 Home Use, Commercial Use, and Similar Electrical Equipment Safety (Quality Control) Order," requiring 23 categories of small household appliances, including grills, massagers, hair clippers, egg beaters, coffee makers, and razors, to be mandatorily affixed with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mark. Products that do not meet the requirements are prohibited from being imported, sold, or stored, with the regulation taking effect from March 2026.
It is reported that India relies heavily on imports for most of its small appliances, and it is believed that "many of the appliances purchased from China do not comply with Western quality and safety standards and are not produced according to specified specifications." Analysts say that this move aims not only to restrict imports from China but also to "attract investment into India's small appliance manufacturing ecosystem and promote local production levels in India."
