Unidentified drones fly over the base where French nuclear submarines are moored, suspected of having Moscow's shadow
According to AFP citing gendarmerie sources, on Thursday evening, December 4, several unidentified drones flew over the submarine base on Île Longue, located in Brittany, Finistère, which is home to France's nuclear deterrent force's nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SNLE).
It was reported that around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, five drones were detected flying over the Île Longue base in Brest harbor. This base houses France's nuclear deterrent force's nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SNLE).
The base immediately launched anti-drone and search deployments. According to the same source, the naval rifleman battalion responsible for the base's protection conducted multiple anti-drone shoots. AFP contacted the Atlantic Maritime Department and the prosecutor's office, but they did not respond immediately.
Nuclear shelter
However, drone flights over this restricted area are not uncommon. On the night of November 17 to 18, there had been reports of drones flying over the "Crozon Peninsula" (Île Longue is part of this peninsula), but without flying over military facilities.
The Île Longue base is a shelter for France's nuclear deterrent force, protected by 120 maritime gendarmes and naval riflemen working together. The base is responsible for maintaining France's four SNLEs, at least one of which is constantly at sea to ensure nuclear deterrence.
Good visibility
Due to the full moon and its close orbit to Earth (a common phenomenon known as a supermoon), visibility was particularly good over Brest harbor (in western France) on Thursday evening.
AFP pointed out that in recent months, reports of drones flying over airports and other sensitive locations, including military sites, in Northern Europe have increased, and leaders of these countries believe these actions have Moscow's shadow behind them.
