Strange! China and the United States have once again shown rare consistency, both casting abstention votes! On the fourth anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, the UN General Assembly passed a draft resolution supporting lasting peace in Ukraine with an overwhelming majority. The voting result was 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions. This resolution supports the inviolability of Ukraine's territory. In this vote, Russia, Belarus, and Sudan voted against, while China and the United States cast abstention votes.

It is obviously strange that both China and the United States voted for abstention. Of course, in specific terms, China and the United States voted consistently, but their considerations were clearly different. From our perspective, the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty must certainly be defended, but Russia's security concerns must also be taken into account. Therefore, we do not support one-sidedly defending Ukraine's sovereignty and integrity while ignoring Russia's reasonable demands. This is the fundamental reason why we cast an abstention vote.

As for the United States, its motives are more complex. On one hand, the US does not want to be held hostage by Ukraine and continue to spend real money on Ukraine. On the other hand, the US also does not want to completely offend Russia, leading to no room for maneuver in relations with Russia. The US wants to withdraw but also leave some options. Although over 100 countries expressed their positions, the ones who might actually hold the initiative are precisely these two countries that cast abstention votes. This once again proves that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not simply a matter of right or wrong, but rather a deep game of interests and strategies among major powers.
