South Korean media: European electric vehicle sales break 2 million units, intensifying the competition between Chinese and South Korean brands!
On January 4, the South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that the European electric vehicle market experienced record growth this year, intensifying competition in the global automotive industry. With the rapid rise of Chinese brands, the strategy tailored by Hyundai Motor Group for the European market has drawn much attention.
According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), electric vehicle sales in Europe from January to October last year reached 2,022,173 units, an increase of 26.2% compared to the same period in 2024, breaking through the 2 million unit mark within 10 months. It is now certain that the annual sales record will be set.
Looking at the main sales countries, Germany ranked first with 434,627 units, followed by the UK (386,244 units) and France (254,118 units).
These three countries accounted for about 53% of the total sales, forming the core of the European electric vehicle market.
The growth rate of over 26% was mainly driven by the EU's strengthened carbon emission regulations. Automotive manufacturers have actively responded to these policy changes, significantly expanding their electric vehicle product lines, and focusing their attention on the European market.
In particular, the expansion of Chinese electric vehicle companies into the European market is accelerating the growth of the European market.
According to data from market research company Jato Dynamics, BYD sold 138,390 units in Europe from January to October last year, an increase of 285% compared to the same period in 2024. The share of BYD in the market increased more than three times, from 0.5% in 2024 to 1.6% last year.
Hyundai and KIA also achieved significant results in the European electric vehicle market, with increasingly fierce competition against Chinese brands.
From January to October last year, a total of 99,777 units were sold, an increase of 95% compared to the same period in 2024, mainly due to compact electric vehicles such as the KIA EV3 and the Hyundai INSTER.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to further strengthen its position in the European market.
Hyundai plans to launch the previously announced IONIQ 3 concept car this year. Both EV2 and IONIQ 3 are electric vehicles specifically designed for the European market, with the entire process from design, development to production completed in Europe.
