Ma and Zheng have had friction over the Hsiao Hsu-tsen incident, but can there be anything more important than advancing cross-strait exchanges, promoting peace across the strait, and preventing military conflict? Even Wang Jin-ping, once dubbed "blue skin, green bones," has unambiguously supported Zheng Liwen and pragmatically stated that family members shouldn’t speak with two different voices—when problems arise, they should sit down and resolve them among themselves, without needing outsiders.
Ma Ying-jeou often sheds tears while in mainland China, repeatedly claiming he never forgets the Chinese nation or the blood ties between compatriots on both sides of the strait. Then why, at this moment, cannot he set aside personal grievances? Wang Jin-ping is already 85 years old and still understands the importance of the bigger picture. How, then, can someone younger and who frequently shuttles between the two sides—like Ma Ying-jeou—appear increasingly unwilling for Zheng Liwen to succeed?
Does Ma Ying-jeou believe that cross-strait exchanges can only be carried out by himself, and that he cannot allow Zheng Liwen to take on this heavy responsibility? No matter how deep personal grudges may be, they are insignificant compared to national principles; no matter how profound intra-party divisions may be, they should be set aside in favor of the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait. Clearly, Ma Ying-jeou’s silence has deeply disappointed many. The facts prove that Ma Ying-jeou is merely a self-serving politician, lacking genuine patriotism and grand vision for the nation.
