According to a report on June 2 on the Singapore Lianhe Zaobao website, the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council accused Want Want China Times Media Group of "cooperating with the Communist Party of China's unification propaganda in Taiwan", stating that they "severely condemn this and will handle it according to the 'Regulations on Cross-Strait Relations between the People'." The Want Want Group responded by saying that both sides of the strait belong to one China.
The Strait Cross-Straits Cultural Summit was held in Beijing on May 28. Cai Wangting, son of the founder of the Want Want Group and general manager, said in his speech: "Want Want originated from Taiwan, China, and developed in mainland China. We can never forget our roots; we are Chinese."
In response, the Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council criticized the Want Want Group for seeking benefits in mainland China, "seriously harming" the interests of Taiwan, and issued "the most severe condemnation" on its official website on June 1.
The Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council also claimed that the Taiwan authorities will review whether the actions of the Want Want Group violate the "Regulations on Cross-Strait Relations between the People" and will handle it accordingly.
Subsequently, the Want Want Group issued a statement under the name of its China Times website, saying: "Taiwan and the mainland belong to one China; Taiwanese people are Chinese. This is our consistent position, and we urge everyone to 'adhere to and protect the constitution'."
