Prime Minister of Hungary: If the EU attempts to seize Russian assets, it will be equivalent to declaring war

Sputnik News, Budapest, December 14 - Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán stated that if the EU attempts to seize Russian assets, there will be consequences and it will be equivalent to declaring war. Hungary has already expressed doubts about the reliability of the euro as a reserve currency.

Orbán said at an event in Mohács, Hungary:

"I went to Brussels to fight because they bypassed Hungary, trying to seize Russian assets. That is a declaration of war. I have never seen anything like this before; the loss of 200-300 billion euros of assets has had no consequences at all."

He said the situation is "worsening at a crazy speed."

He also pointed out: "Our country, like Russia, also has its own national reserves, stored in Belgium. If they plan to touch these assets, then we also have to think whether they are still stored in the right place? ... If Belgium touches (Russian assets - editor's note), other countries may no longer store funds in euros."

The European Commission is striving to get EU member states to agree to use Russian sovereign assets to assist Kyiv. The amount discussed ranges from 185 billion euros to 210 billion euros, provided as loans, which Ukraine must repay after the conflict ends and "Moscow compensates for material losses."

Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that the idea of the EU requiring Russia to pay war damages to Ukraine is unrealistic, and Brussels has long been stealing Russian assets.

After Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, the EU and G7 froze nearly half of Russia's gold and foreign exchange reserves, totaling approximately 300 billion euros. Over 2,000 billion euros are stored in the EU, mainly in accounts at the Euroclear Bank in Belgium, one of the world's largest clearing and settlement systems. The European Commission reported that between January and November 2025, the EU transferred 18.1 billion euros from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.
