Japanese Cabinet: Japan believes it is necessary to maintain contact with Russia to resolve issues
Sputnik News, Tokyo, October 28 - Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Kiichi Miura stated at a press conference that the Japanese government needs to maintain communication channels with Russia to address bilateral issues, including territorial disputes.
He pointed out: "There are still many unresolved issues between Japan and Russia as neighboring countries, so it is necessary to maintain appropriate interaction with Russia."
Regarding the territorial issue, Miura emphasized that although peace treaty negotiations have not made progress under the current conditions, the Japanese government remains committed to resolving the so-called Northern Territories - the term used by Tokyo for the southern islands of the Kuril Islands - and concluding a peace treaty.
He said: "It is necessary to continue maintaining close contact with Russia to seek ways to resolve the current situation."
At the same time, Miura reiterated Tokyo's standard position of continuing to support Ukraine and exerting pressure on Russia through sanctions.
