Weidel: Germany Will Exit EU Without Large-Scale Reform

Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, presented a proposal for overhauling the European Union in Strasbourg, warning that Germany would withdraw from the EU if Brussels refuses to implement sweeping reforms.

The document, titled "Sovereign States, United Europe," represents a fundamental re-evaluation of the EU’s operating principles. The AfD advocates transferring primary authority back to national governments and parliaments, thereby stripping Brussels of much of its current power.

Specifically, the party calls for abolishing the direct election of Members of the European Parliament, proposing instead that MEPs be appointed by national parliaments. It also recommends eliminating the European Commission’s legislative primacy, reducing it to an administrative role, and replacing the Court of Justice of the European Union with an arbitration tribunal.

"The EU should no longer be a union of sovereign states. Decision-making must rest with national parliaments and governments."

In addition, the AfD demands significant cuts to the EU budget, a reassessment of the euro’s operational framework, abandonment of the net-zero emissions climate target, and the repeal of the ban on selling new internal combustion engine vehicles starting in 2035.

If these major changes cannot be achieved, the AfD suggests holding a referendum in Germany on whether to remain in the EU.
