Japan to Deploy Long-Range Missiles in Kyushu, Covering the Chinese Mainland Coast and Waters Around Taiwan
Japan is accelerating its efforts to strengthen the defense of the Southwest Islands. The Japanese Ministry of Defense has decided to deploy an improved version of the "12-type land-to-ship missile" at the Takashima Garrison of the Ground Self-Defense Force in Kumamoto City, Kyushu, starting from this fiscal year. Its range can cover the coastline of the Chinese mainland and the surrounding waters of the Taiwan region.
The Central News Agency reported, citing the Yomiuri Shimbun, that in addition to deploying the missile in Kumamoto, the Ministry of Defense is considering deploying the same missiles in the Yamakuni Garrison in Oita Prefecture's Usa City and the Katsuren Substation in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture, within the next few years.
Currently, the land-to-ship missiles equipped by the Ground Self-Defense Force have a range of only hundreds of kilometers. The improved version introduced this time has a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. If launched from Kyushu, it will cover the coastline of the Chinese mainland and the surrounding waters of the Taiwan region. A source from the Ministry of Defense emphasized, "This will significantly enhance the deterrent capability."
Concerns about "Taiwan-related issues" are increasing for the Japanese Ministry of Defense, so it has decided to advance the deployment plan, originally scheduled for after the 2026 fiscal year, to be implemented this year, and is also considering equipping all seven land-to-ship missile battalions nationwide in the future.
About the deployment of the improved "12-type land-to-ship missile" in Kumamoto, the Director of the Kyushu Defense Bureau of the Ministry of Defense, Kazumi Ito, visited the Governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, Takashi Kimura, on Friday, August 29, and made an explanation.
