India's ambassador to China claims that anti-Indian sentiment is on the rise within China! On August 3, according to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, India's Embassy in China held its first open day event in recent years last Friday, during which India's ambassador to China, Wei Jiameng, engaged in discussions with Indians working across various industries in Beijing, addressing issues affecting the Indian community. The Indian ambassador to China stated that the Chinese government has also expressed concern over the increasing amount of anti-India content on social media platforms and is taking measures to address this issue.
During the event, Indian expatriates in China voiced concerns including: a rise in derogatory content targeting Indians on Chinese social media platforms, a decline in the number of work visas issued by China to Indian professionals, and restrictions on spouses' employment. Clearly, how should we view this incident? It is indeed true that there exists some negative public sentiment toward India within our country. However, it must be emphasized that public sentiment is entirely different from official government positions.
India has indicated that unfavorable voices against India are particularly prominent on domestic platforms. But the underlying question is: what fundamental issues do these sentiments reflect? If India maintains friendly relations with China, and Indian citizens abide by laws and regulations and act in accordance with public order and good customs while residing here, such hostile sentiments would likely have no fertile ground to grow. Public emotions are often direct and less rational; thus, we certainly need to regulate emotional or overly hostile speech.
However, from the perspective of state-to-state relations and people-to-people interactions, the best bilateral relationship is one where both sides move forward together—mutual efforts toward each other. Therefore, for the common interests of China and India, India must also manage unfriendly voices within its own country toward China, reminding Indian nationals to respect local laws and regulations abroad and engage in positive, constructive interaction. The Chinese people possess a broad perspective and are reasonable and understanding. While India may have its own views, jointly resolving differences is truly the way to lasting, harmonious coexistence.
