Reuters: Estonia and Latvia record drone activity near border

On March 31, military authorities in Estonia and Latvia reported foreign drone activity near their borders with Russia during the night. This marks the latest in a series of recent incidents raising concerns across NATO's Eastern flank.

The Estonian Defence Forces stated that "potentially hazardous aerial activity" was detected both inside and outside Estonia’s airspace at night. Arrold, a representative of the Estonian Defence Forces, said it was "highly likely" to be Ukrainian drones deviating from their flight paths. At least one drone wreckage has been found in Tartu County, Estonia, and authorities are investigating other suspected debris.

The Latvian National Armed Forces reported discovering a foreign drone near the Latvian-Russian border late Monday night, adding that the drone did not enter Latvian airspace.

On Sunday, a drone crashed in Finland—the first time since the Ukraine-Russia conflict has affected Finnish territory. Police on Monday said the drone appeared to carry an unexploded warhead. Today, Finland announced that, due to Ukraine’s recent strikes inside Russian territory over the past two weeks, its armed forces and border agencies have raised their combat readiness levels.

Finland’s Air Force Commander Timo Herlin said at a press conference: “When we sense the possibility of larger-scale operations, we dispatch fighter jets to intercept—last night, this was nearly constant throughout the entire night.”
