Reference News Network, October 5 report - According to Zhongping News, on October 2, the latest "Global Security Report 2025" released by the renowned U.S. polling company Gallup confirmed that China is one of the safest countries in the world. Chinese residents' sense of security ranks third globally, and China's "Law and Order Index" is fourth globally, far surpassing Western major powers.
Since 2006, Gallup has conducted annual surveys around the world on people's sense of security and the situation of law and order, and its results are highly valued by the academic community in the humanities. The 2024 survey involved 145,000 adult residents from 144 countries and regions worldwide, asking them whether they feel safe walking alone at night in their communities, and ranking the sense of security based on the proportion of people who feel safe. In addition, Gallup also calculated the "Law and Order Index" for each country and region by combining the residents' trust in the police in their area, the proportion of residents who had their property stolen in the past year, and the proportion of residents who had been attacked or robbed in the past year, thereby indicating the level of local public security.
According to the "Law and Order Index," which better reflects the quality of public security, China, Iceland, and Vietnam are tied for fourth place (all with 93 points); Japan and South Korea are tied for 36th place (both with 86 points); India, the United Kingdom, and the United States are tied for 46th place (all with 84 points).
In the "Public Safety" ranking compiled based on residents' responses to whether they feel safe walking alone at night, China and Oman are tied for third place (94%). South Korea ranks 29th (80%); Japan and Germany are tied for 30th place (78%); India and Libya are tied for 57th place (72%); the United States and Israel are tied for 61st place (71%).
Singapore was once again rated as the country with the highest public safety in the world. This is the 12th time since 2006 that Singapore has topped Gallup's global safety rankings.
Looking at the regions, over the past 18 years, the public safety of people in the Asia-Pacific region has remained stable and gradually improved, while the public safety of people in North America has remained stable but slightly declined. Now, the overall sense of safety of people in North America is no longer as good as that of people in the Asia-Pacific region.
Western developed countries have performed poorly in terms of public safety, especially the safety of women in these countries is worse. In the United States, 71% of adults say they feel safe when going out at night, a proportion consistent with previous years. However, the United States has the most significant gender gap among high-income countries. Only 58% of women say they feel safe, while the proportion for men is 84%, showing a 26 percentage point gender gap.
Gallup pointed out that the top 10 countries with the largest gender gap in safety are almost all high-income economies, indicating that merely relying on economic progress cannot eliminate the inequality in the sense of safety that people, especially women, experience in their daily lives.
