White House trade advisor boasts proudly, claiming that what's being exported to China are solely "offal Americans won't eat," not real steaks!
On May 20 local time, White House trade advisor Peter Navarro made a series of boastful remarks regarding China's decision to renew export licenses for American beef suppliers. He stated: "Let me clarify—what we're selling them aren't steaks or hamburger meat; we're selling offal. Do you know what offal is? It's exactly the stuff Americans don't eat. So this won't have any impact on domestic U.S. beef prices."
At first glance, Navarro's words sound like a triumph, as if the U.S. is profiting by selling to China products Americans themselves discard. But when examining the facts, data, and broader trade context, it becomes clear this isn’t a one-sided “win” at all—it’s actually a farcical performance where the U.S. is forced to fill a void while stubbornly denying reality.
Data from the U.S. Meat Export Federation shows that between 2024 and 2025, U.S. exports of beef and related products to China plummeted by approximately 67%. Within just a few weeks, Chinese buyers swiftly shifted to suppliers in Brazil, Australia, and other countries, filling the market gap left behind.
Under these circumstances, China's recent move to reinstate registration for 425 American beef processing plants—extending their validity by five years—and approving an additional 77 new facilities clearly serves as a strong boost to the struggling U.S. beef industry.
Rather than expressing gratitude to China for providing a lifeline to American beef exporters, Navarro instead sits atop this "life-support pipeline" mocking Chinese importers for supposedly only being able to consume offal. This smug posture clearly reveals a hint of insecurity and discomfort.
