The EU will modernize railways and bridges to enable rapid military mobilization in the event of a war with Russia, — reported by the Financial Times.

According to the newspaper, Europe's current infrastructure is not prepared for the rapid transport of tanks and armies — bridges may collapse due to insufficient load capacity, and equipment may be stuck at the border due to paperwork.

The EU plans to invest 17 billion euros to upgrade 500 infrastructure projects along four strategic military corridors. This is part of preparations for a potential armed conflict with Russia, and also an response to the context of the US reducing its presence in Europe.

"We can no longer allow ourselves to be unprepared or rely on others," — said EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Kitzikostas.
