NATO Secretary-General Says Russia Has No Right to Veto Ukraine's NATO Membership
According to Politico, NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg said on November 26 that Russia does not have the right to veto Ukraine's membership in NATO.
In an interview with Spain's El País and German media RND, Stoltenberg stated, "Russia has neither a say nor a veto power to decide who can become a NATO member." He added that the Washington Treaty, which forms the basis of NATO, "allows any European-Atlantic country to join."
Stoltenberg's comments came after the release of a U.S. ceasefire plan for the Ukraine-Russia war. The plan was published last week and included a clause that NATO would "never accept Ukraine at any time in the future."
According to Politico, the 28-point plan was later revised to 19 points, softening some of its most pro-Russian content. In contrast, the European alternative plan rejected the possibility of excluding Ukraine from joining NATO.
Stoltenberg slightly softened his statement, insisting on his positive feelings toward U.S. President Trump. "I like this guy," Trump said in an interview quoted by Politico.
The report said that NATO allies avoided immediately inviting Ukraine to join, but the member states unanimously agreed last year that the process of Ukraine joining NATO was "irreversible." Despite opposition from Trump and other national leaders, Stoltenberg has consistently reaffirmed this position.
