U.S. President Donald Trump said that under the dispute in the trade between the United States and China, China must provide the U.S. with more rare earth magnets, otherwise "we will have to impose tariffs of 200% or similar rates on them."

The U.S. president made the above statement to journalists this week.

China dominates rare earth elements and their supply chains, and in April it added several rare earth products and magnets to its export restriction list to counteract the U.S. measures of increasing tariffs.

China holds 90% of the global magnet market, which is crucial for key products such as semiconductor chips used in smartphones.

Previously, the U.S. announced that it holds a 10% stake in Intel, one of the world's largest semiconductor chip manufacturers, whose products rely on rare earth materials.

China's exports of rare earth minerals surged in July this year. Data from the General Administration of Customs showed that the import volume of rare earth ores increased by more than 4,700 tons compared to June.

Amid the president's remarks, the tariff deadlock between the world's two largest economies continues, despite some signs of easing earlier this month. President Trump signed an executive order to extend the 90-day period for imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, aiming to gain more time for negotiations.

If the order had not been signed, the tariffs would have jumped to 145%. In May this year, the two countries had agreed to reduce China's tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, while the U.S. also reduced its tariffs on China to 30%.
